As Mycroft reviews the footage from Culverton Smith’s morgue, he revisits his original question: whether John Watson would be the making of his brother, or make him worse than ever. He’s come to a conclusion, but decides to give John one last chance. So he gives him a choice.

Rec: Although set after series 4, this fic gave me post-series 3 vibes with the twist that it’s John who is sent on a virtual suicide mission to Eastern Europe, and Sherlock who is left with an emotionally devastating note and more questions than answers. There are some great shockers along the way, with juicy emotional confrontations, a race against time, and no room for regrets.

What really sold me on this though is the excellent discussion of choices, autonomy, consequences, and the balance between doing what you think is right vs. allowing other people to live their own lives. Well, that and what basically amounts to a honeymoon trip with all the luscious trimmings once all the bad guys are taken care of!
