Wishbone Sequel Update

If there is one thing that I learned ten years ago, it's that I shouldn't talk about books that haven't happened. I learned this by writing stuff about the sequel to Wishbone and having it not happen. It's best for me to wait until it's finished and, hopefully, contracted, because my writing life has been as precarious as the rest of my life.

I'm writing now because the sequel is almost finished. I've been writing steadily since January, sometimes only 500 words a day, some days no words. Since I started writing this post, I completed the first draft, which stands at 89,500 words. I have two talented and supportive beta readers, so this draft is quite a bit more mature than might be expected given that I've only published one other novel-length work.

There is no contract yet, so I won't say anything about that except that I'm in touch with a fantastic editor and remain hopeful that stuff will happen in its own time.

I have serious feels going on about this. Of course, everyone has serious feels right now. The twin ancient disasters of disease and racism are killing us and also sucking the joy and pleasure out of our lives.

I'd like to pass on a bit of joy and pleasure. I decided to commission an illustration of Wishbone back in May. I hired artist Lawrence Gullo, impressed by an illustration of Daron from Daron's Guitar Chronicles by my good friend Cecilia Tan. The world needs more pretty things, now and always.
