I know that many of you feel helpless and frustrated with the countless number of cases that showcase racism in America. We’ve watched the footage, we are hurt, what should we do? How can we improve racial tensions and change the system? I have asked myself a number of questions in relation to the mistreatment and prejudice that people of color constantly face not only in America but almost everywhere in the world and I’ve understood that it’s plain and simple: Any kind of unjust, privilege thinking and behavior starts AT HOME. Our thinking is first programmed by our parents and then conditioned by our environment. So sadly underlying, covert racism has been passed down generation after generation by the use of subtle racist remarks and/or “jokes” and by the constant use of stereotypes. Most likely when someone uses covert racist language they believe they are not racist simply because their behavior is not blatant— their racial “jokes” are not public slurs. When in reality covert racism is far more dangerous, because it tricks the mind into thinking that “mild” behavior is OK. I urge you to dissect your own behavior, perception and language towards all people. I urge you “to check” your friends and family when they use colorful, racist, stereotypical language. Let them know when their language and behavior is hurtful, upsetting and plain WRONG. I urge you to put a stop to the generational pattern by informing yourself and putting into practice inclusivity, love and fair behavior. It takes more time to see results of behavioral change but it’s the true change that needs to happen. The root is rotten, watering the plant won’t suffice. #MMCM
