Stood at the helm, steered this ship,
thought that if I were to sail
I had to sail alone.
Raised the mast, bailed the water
when the seas grew stormy
and waves sought the dryness
of my decks,
until you.
I, wrapped in flag and weary,
found you shining in some distance.
You, the island of hope the winds
pulled me away from, you,
the soft shore I sought out but missed
in the tempest.
Days I circled, months spent tossed
and churning on the reef around you,
could you hear me calling out?
Could you see me through the rain,
as I leapt from this sinking boat?
I, soaked and hopeless,
washed up on your sand,
you, the island that saved me,
the harbor I thought I’d never
find.
