 Half court and a wager,
dirty lot behind the Y.
Baseline was weeds,
wasn’t it?  Cracks in the key.
Hot as hell spilled over and
tread was off the ball,
wasn’t it?
Still had its air,
enough to hold shape.
Short sleeves and hope
and busted hoop
but the rim was straight,
bit of net left.

Half court and a wager,
tattoo on the line,
dribble and again,
you one armed it, didn’t you?
Caught air and chain link
after a bounce or two,
wide left and short.
I blamed it on
the wind.

Half court and a wager,
quarter sized first
if banks were open
or string music
was to follow.
Leapt into it, didn’t I,
all laceless shoes
and checkerboard.
I knew when it left
my hand,
dirty lot behind some Y,
cracks in the key,
you said you knew
before that.
