A lesson learned from toilet paper

Toilet paper, white gold, Texas tea, that’s the way some people seem to view it ever since this whole corona-covis thing started.
Have I bought my fair share of TP? Absolutely. The fact is that once people started buying it up like it was oxygen at the bottom of the ocean, I’ve bought a few packs just so I wouldn’t run out when everyone else picked the aisles clean.
When I bought the first few packages I got what was left in the store which was the basic, single ply, no-frills, no padding, no quilting toilet paper. I bought it as a last resort.
The funny thing is, someone opened a pack and started using it. I know, it’s crazy, right? Why would someone actually use something that was purchased for the household? I’m gonna have to have a family meeting about this.
However, I discovered something odd. I bought 12 rolls of the plain-jane TP and I’m still using the last roll in the downstairs bathroom, nearly a month and a half later. The upstairs bathroom has the 2 ply, soft, quilted rolls, and I’ve used more than double the amount in the same amount of time.
To answer your unasked question, yes, both bathrooms get approximately the same amount of traffic.
The lesson I learned today as I was using the last roll of the basic stuff was this. We as a country are prone to replace function with comfort.
My car has windows that have to be rolled down manually. (Gasp!) Do they work? Yep. Do I really need power windows and power locks to get me to work and back? Nope. The car works just fine. It gets me where I need to go and it’s paid for.
Could I get another car that has better amenities? Sure, but why would I when my current car does what I need it to do?
Will these stimulus checks be the new toilet paper?
Will people run out and buy up the things they want rather than what they need?
Will fear be behind the wheel of the current economy rather than necessity?
I have to wonder how many people are going to spend their new found money all in one weekend then have nothing left to support themselves with.
To me, that would be the most frightening of horror stories.
Take a lesson from the toilet paper, function over comfort.
