Flocking First Chapter
OK, I've had enough questions now about the first chapter--the fact that it's more complex and less reader-friendly than the rest of the book. What I've recommended is that the reader, if intimidated, go quickly through the first chapter, get to the rapid movement of Chapters 2 and beyond, then go back to Chapter 1 in the process of digesting the book. Chapter one IS more complex. That's because much needs to be established in Chapter 1. Besides which, Chapter 1 is entirely in Jeremy Lipton's voice (and thought train). Jeremy is extremely bright, extremely thoughtful; he thinks the deepest of thoughts in complex sentences. Dumbing him down for the reader would give a false impression of the very essence of the man. Thus the language and the complexity of the imagery in the first chapter reflect the man who's being introduced. Get through it and the rest of the narrative is relatively straightforward. But when you're done with the book, read Chapter 1 again.
You'll appreciate it the second time, I'm sure.
