Published in 2019. Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch responds to a request from his best friend, Billy Cronk. Years ago, Mike was forced to testify in court against his friend, Billy, who shot a wounded man and killed him. Billy was sent to prison. Now, he needs to see Mike urgently but won’t tell him anything until he gets there. When Mike arrives, Billy wants him to look into one of the guards, Dawn Richie but won’t tell him why. Mike doesn’t see a point and leaves, not on the best terms. Nevertheless, he looks into the guard and finds nothing. Meanwhile, he gets a call from another friend. The wolf-dog, Shadow, has been found but is badly injured. A few years ago, Mike owned the wolf-dog before it ran away. He rushes to the vet to see him.
I enjoyed reading this novel and learning more about the state of Maine. I’d visited the state before but knew very little about it. I didn’t realize there were so many regional accents in the area and I didn’t know the Amish was one of the fastest growing religious sects in the country. The author brings together all of the plots and subplots and maintained my interest in both. He’s written nine other books so I’ll keep an eye out for them.
