Two People on a String

I had better not think. Thinking was the essence of the problem - not the doing, doing was simple. Action, I thought, is not "me," because it involves no thought, it is all of impulses, robotic, instinctive impulses, which do not feel. I had better not think, but the clock was ticking; its rhythm speaking, warning, as though it, too, were conscious. I tried to imagine the future "me," the me of tomorrow, when it would be over. That person was calm, filled with nothing but relief, and I tried...
