Self-repost series, next up! For the majority of the time, I write from either Sherlock or John’s perspectives, but every now and then it’s fun to step outside of that and write them through someone else’s eyes. During the period between series 3 and series 4 (2014-2017), I wrote one fix-it fic after another, trying to consider every angle and every character’s experience of those events. During the exchange at Baker Street following the revelation of Mary as the shooter, Sherlock, Sherlock and Mary have this exchange: 

SHERLOCK: … Magnussen knows your secret, which is why you were going to kill him; and I assume you befriended Janine … (he grimaces, shifting uncomfortably on his chair) … in order to get close to him.

Mary, of course, diverted back to Sherlock, but it occurred to me to consider Janine’s experience of this whole thing. Sherlock fake-dated Janine for all of a maximum of 3-4 weeks, given that he met her at the wedding and that, by all canonical evidence, he and John hadn’t seen each other for a month during the honeymoon (Mary says “a month” the morning that Kate Whitney comes over). Mary, on the other hand, would have had to establish a friendship with Janine long enough and deep enough to make it reasonable to have asked her to be her maid of honour. That would have been a much longer investment than 3-4 weeks. And then Mary attacked Janine the night she went to Magnussen’s office and left her unconscious and bleeding on the floor and never went back to check on her, never called her an ambulance, none of that. What an amazing friend! Hardly surprising, but still. And then Janine clearly realized quite quickly that the engagement and relationship had all been fake, so she really got a raw deal. This is her experience of the story. And it’s still very much a Johnlock story. :)
