West Boggs Run Vista-Sproul State Forest
This is another spectacular vista looking over Boggs Run Gorge in the Sproul State Forest. It is located across the gorge from Boggs Run Vista, and as the name indicates, it is on the west side of the gorge. The gorge is fairly narrow and the terrain is impressive.
The hike begins at the end of Boggs Ridge Road. This is narrow gravel road that is in decent shape. When I drove it, a car could handle it, but a vehicle with a little more clearance is a good idea. Avoid this road when it is muddy, and of course when there is snow. I’ve been told that Pete’s Run Road down to PA 144 near South Renovo is quite rugged and should be avoided.
From the gate, follow the forest road east. After about a half mile, notice a forest of white birch trees to the left. Just before this forest, notice an ATV trail to the right, take it. It descends into a small valley, turns left, and then makes a short climb to the top of the plateau, where it turns right. The terrain is level with a slight incline. Where the ATV trail begins to turn left and descend, you will need to go off trail to the right. You might see a faint footpath. The laurel is not that thick. Descend to the point and enjoy the stunning views of the gorge. The gorge is about 1,100 feet deep and 2,500 feet wide. Far below is the Chuck Keiper Trail, but that trail does not reach either Boggs Run or West Boggs Run Vistas.
Return the way you came. This hike is about 1.5 – 1.75 miles, one way. No trails are marked or blazed. On the map above, red is off trail although you may be able to find a faint footpath. Parking is at about 41.310693, -77.735200. The view is at about 41.315883, -77.713441. Please treat this place with respect and pick up any litter you may find.
