Fun story about how I met Amy... I previously worked with two other narrators to bring Kingdom of Embers to audiobook. Both were new to the industry and in the end weren't able to produce the book. Frustrated with the process, I put the audiobook issue on the back burner. At Penned Con 2019 last September, Amy was walking around introducing herself and handing out her card. We chatted for a few minutes and I knew she was the right person for the job. When I got home I looked her up and listened to some samples to confirm that her voice would match my characters. It's such a cliche, but the rest, as they say, is history! I love how Amy brought this series to life! Thanks Amy!
More about the characters...
Alena (pronounced Uh-LEE-nuh) - Alena tells the story of how she, a seventeen year-old vampire-witch hybrid, must hide her identity from everyone, human, witch, and vampire alike because creatures like her are forbidden by vampire and witch laws. She is desperate to figure out what her mother is looking for and in the process meets Hunter, an imaginary friend from age four. Hunter and she embark on a mission to discover how they knew they interacted as children. They find they are the key to releasing a curse on witch souls damning them to purgatory.
Hunter - Seventeen year-old Hunter has no clue he is a witch, but there is no doubt in his mind that he knew Alena as a child. Once she reveals that witches do exist and helps him awaken his powers, he commits to figuring out what his purpose is and why they were able to interact as preschoolers.
Theron - Seventeen year-old vampire-witch hybrid, Theron, may be the only other being like Alena. He is wild and reckless and Alena is drawn to his energy. But there is also something dark and sinister about him. Questions arise as Alena learns Theron is Hunter’s half-brother.
Thanatos - A centuries old witch and High Priest of the Witch Lines, he is father to Hunter and Theron.
Anne - Alena’s vampire mother and Vampire Chancellor, she will do everything in her power to protect her daughter.
Main Character Interview - Alena
You’re half vampire and half witch. How do you deal with that?
Being a half-vampire/half-witch hybrid that is mainstreamed, i.e. mixes with humans, is actually easier than being a full vampire that has to fit in with humans and resist primal urges on a minute-by-minute basis. Being a being that is forbidden by both vampire and witch law is the hardest part. I have to had my witch nature everywhere except in my home which saps a lot of my energy.
You felt your mother was hiding something from you. Can you explain what and why?
My mother, who is Chancellor of the Vampire Council which is basically like the President, moved us from city to city every other year or so. It seemed like she was either running from or hunting something. Starting at age twelve she would take me on these outings and ask if I sensed anything about certain people. I thought maybe we were looking for my dad, whom I’ve never met, but then that didn’t fit the profile. Then I guessed we may be searching for another hybrid being like myself which was kind of weird. Like she was searching for someone for me to marry.
You live with a very old witch, Orm, who is your mentor. Tell us about him.
Orm is awesome. He’s like the best grandfather figure ever. If my mouth didn’t water every time I was near him he would be the perfect substitute father. He’s taught me all about witches and magic and I will join his coven when I turn eighteen.
As a witch what is so special about turning eighteen?
At eighteen a witch undergoes a series of trials which they have to pass to become a full witch and gain all their powers. At this time they also generally join a coven and can also gain additional power from coven members.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
Honestly, I’m obsessed with figuring out who my father is and what my mother is looking for. Beyond that I’d like to go to college, perhaps be a lawyer or a doctor. I think I could really help people, maybe even my people if mother allows me to serve in the Vampire Council.
You were born in 1999. Can you tell us how it feels to be a millennial baby? How do you feel about living possibly 900 years?
I’m not sure it feels any different than any other generation. I have the advantage that my mother is over five-hundred years old and Orm and Elizabeth, over seven-hundred years old, so I have their experience and vantage point to learn from. At seventeen I can’t fathom living thirty much less fifty or a hundred years and what my life will look like then.
