Better late than never

Hello, Write Edge readers! I realize I’m two days late to post for this week. It’s been a little bit of a bumpy start to the week with everyone trying to figure out what social distancing actually means. While the kids were technically going to be on spring break this week anyway, the “break” from everything takes on an ominous sound when we’ve been told the “break” doesn’t have an end yet.

News reports have been coming in of people going to both extremes: some hoarding toilet paper and others living it up on the beach with hundreds more. One man — and I’m not making this up or exaggerating — said he was on the beach and not worried about COVID-19 because there was mostly sand everywhere and not as many surfaces to touch.

Well. I truly hope he and his loved ones are okay. But a little caution never hurt anyone, now, did it?

Rest assured, readers, I’m still here and still healthy. Just trying to get into the rhythm of a new (hopefully temporary) way of life. So even though it’s Wednesday, let’s get started on our week, shall we?

First, our weekly motivational quote. I think this definitely goes back to the idea of staying informed, but it’s also inspirational. It reminds us that while we’re living through a scary time, humankind has survived all sorts of catastrophes and survived.

“The failure to read good books both enfeebles the vision and strengthens our most fatal tendency—the belief that the here and now is all there is.”—Allan Bloom

Next is this week’s short fiction. Yes, I know that it was supposed to come out two days ago. Yes, I know that the date on top of it is for Monday. Let’s just play pretend and say it posted that day, shall we?
