I think reviews of books are like art...the pictures that most people like, but don't evoke strong feelings at either end of the spectrum, are often pleasant but not earth shattering nor thought provoking. Books are similar - books that evoke extreme feelings such as " I really loved this incredible book!" will likely evoke an equal level of emotion at the opposite end of the spectrum "I really didn't get this book!" Embrace the extreme views - those that are perceived as negative and positive - if you wrote a book that evoked any emotion thats a good thing.

I just have to say that I have bought a bunch of kindle books from amazon that have only 1 or 2 out of 5 stars, and I actually tend to like them more and rate them quite a bit higher myself. Meanwhile, there are plenty of books that have gotten 4 or 5 stars on amazon that I have rated lower. Same goes for goodreads ratings. I sometimes wonder if I am crazy because I go to rate a book 4 or 5 stars, and I notice the average is only around 2 stars and vice versa. It takes a lot for me to give a negative review; and, even when I do, I tend to mention the parts I did like as well, but I would think as an author it would be understood that not everyone is going to like your work. What fun would reading be anyway if we all enjoyed and hated the same books? There'd be nothing to discuss, and there would be no need for a site like goodreads.
I have just recently started my own blog, with thought that I wanted to share with anyone & everyone my love of books. In doing so, I have discovered that not everyone shares my opinion about the books I love/hate/or just think are ok. But, that is what is so great about being an avid reader, there are so many genres, authors, and choices out there to chooses from we can just move on to the next great read. A few short years ago I was only reading one genre of books that I almost ran out of things to read....I made that leap to other types of stories and I am so glad I did it. I read reviews others leave for a book, but I also know that what others may like I may not & vise versa. Now with a blog and reviews to post I don't mind if someone doesn't agree with what I have to say, I enjoy hearing others opinions, and so should an author.5 stars or 1, good or bad, the fact that we are all human beings, have opinions, and are allowed to express those opinions should be celebrated .
I write what I think of the book.AND I have a right to my opinion-WHY?-because I bought the book!I'm not a professional writer/reviewer or such, just little old(yep)Jane Public! And I write what I really thought about that book-not some sugar coated crap that will make everybody happy.Would you writer's really prefer all nice reviews?imagine going down the line of a 100 terrific reviews?by the 5th one I'd be done reading them! I don't put a lot of stock in reviews UNLESS there's LOTS of people saying the same thing. I don't want everyone to be like me, celebrate our differences it would be a boring world if we all thought the same! I wish I had read the reviews BEFORE I wasted 3 hours at the movies watching "MEET JOE BLACK"- three hours I will never get back.
LOL That's funny! That is was THE longest movie in my History!...lol. As for writers you ARE correct there..I have even seen writers give other writers 5 stars just because they didn't want to "be mean"or "they might give my book 5 stars"-some writers just need thicker skin! Isn't funny how 500 people could give you(NOT YOU-BUT EVERYONE)a compliment and 1 person criticizes and you don't remember the people with praise only the one person with criticizm ?
