Note to Self… "In case I ever need to perform an emergency tracheotomy…"

While I was on my walk this morning, the thought came to me that I need to get a ball-point pen to keep in my purse—just in case I ever need to perform an emergency tracheotomy on someone.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend's husband Tom (retired Army, retired Police Officer, incredibly cool, and very handsome older man) mentioned (during our conversation on how I might someday need to perform a tracheotomy and thus be prepared by having a ballpoint pen in my purse) that if I had a ballpoint pen on me when such an occasion arose…I wouldn't even really need my little pocket knife to make an incision at someone's throat if I needed to do an emergency tracheotomy on them, because I'd probably be able to puncture through the person's skin at the hollow of their throat with the smaller/sharper part of the pen casing. Thus, as I was walking this morning, I did a mental "note to self" that, the next time I'm at Wal-Mart, I need to pick up a couple of ballpoint pens to keep in purse.

This got me to thinking, wondering if everyone finds themselves making mental "notes to self" on their morning walks.  Do you?

Melissa I've watched MASH for years and I'm all ready for an emergency trach OR reinflating a collapsed lung. I'm just sayin...

Alysia Okay, this post totally cracks me up...so random. Just curious, but would you ever actually DO it? Stab someone in the throat with a ballpoint pen? What if you weren't sure if it'd even help? I just don't know if I could do it...CPR, I'm good...heimlich...check...stab someone with a ballpoint pen...not so much. Hee hee.

Melissa No no no! You don't actually STAB with the pen! You make an incision with a small, sharp knife and then insert the pen (sans innards of the pen) into the opening so the patient has something to breathe through!

Alysia Ha ha, good thing I've not had to try that as I'd have obviously done more harm than good, eh? I need to watch "Just Like Heaven" again for appropriate protocol :) Hee hee.

Melissa LOVE that movie! I also watch the surgery channel just in case. I mean, you never know when someone might keel over and NEED me and all of the phones are down and the doctors who lives down the street are unavilable, right? All four of them. At the same time.
