Colbert Thinks Trump Has Handled This Iran Business Like a Terrible Doctor Handles Cancer (Video)

Stephen Colbert is still figuring out how he feels now that what he calls “the Iran almost-war” appears to have ended, but on Thursday’s episode of “The Late Show,” he seemed pretty certain that Trump has been as big a jerk about the whole thing as a really bad doctor.

During his monologue, Colbert said that with apparent easing of tensions between the U.S. and Iran, “the world’s sphincter is finally un-clenching.” He then considered how “just a couple of days later, with the perspective of time, we can finally ask ‘was any of this legal?'”

Colbert noted that Trump has claimed he ordered the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani last week in order to stop “an imminent attack.” However, “so far Trump hasn’t provided any evidence of that, or told anyone what the attack would have been.”

That aspect of the situation has even angered some Republicans, Colbert noted, like Utah Senator Mike Lee, who described a briefing by Trump administration officials as “probably the worst briefing I’ve seen on a military issue in the 9 years I’ve served in the United States Senate.” Lee also told fox news “they refused to answer the question” of just what kind of attack they’re claiming was imminent.

“That was the only reason for the meeting,” Colbert said. “That’s like a doctor saying ‘yeah uh, we have the results of your MRI, but I refuse to show them to you. So, what do you want to talk about- hey, have you finished binging ‘The Witcher’ on Netflix yet? If not I’d get to that in the next couple of weeks if I were you.”

Colbert ended the bit by talking about a Vox report that during the briefing, Trump officials “were even ‘shushing’ lawmakers who asked tough questions.”

“OK, that one’s fine,” Colbert joked. “Remember what James Madison said to John Adams at the constitutional convention about the separation of powers: ‘Shut your dirty little mouth!'”
