I’ve heard the statement God created man in his own image...

I’ve heard the statement God created man in his own image so many times over my lifetime. From my days of being forced to sit quietly with my hands crossed in Sunday school to the numerous times that I had to attend church on those rare special occasions. I’ve even heard this statement over the thousands of hours of TV I have watched over the years.

I’ve never really given it much thought until recently because it’s always been background noise and had no real-life relevance in my day to day life. If you asked me what it meant a couple of years ago, I would have told you that it was written in the bible to control the masses.

Although my relationship with God is much stronger today than yesterday, there are still questions that intrigue me. What image does God create today? Is the person you see in the mirror, purely God’s image, or does God somehow shape your perception of yourself? Does God create his vision of what you should be, or does God create you as a reflection of how you see yourself?

It’s funny sometimes when you have heard a phrase or read a book for a second or third time, and suddenly you see something different than before. It’s the reason I read a good book multiple times. I don’t claim to have the answers to these questions, and I never will.

However, I do believe your perception of yourself is a direct connection to God, and the image you hold of yourself will ultimately create who you become. If your picture of yourself is somehow related to God’s image of you, maybe you should take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself this question. Who’s really looking back?
