Author Interview 20 Questions With Joseph Hansen

At what age did you start writing? Was it something you enjoyed as a child or did it come later in life?

I enjoyed drawing and reading as a kid and started writing in my mid twenties but it was something that I had always known I would do.

Were you an avid reader as a child?

Still am, constantly have two books going, one on Audible and one on Kindle

What was the first thing you had published?

A story called Cousin Sonny under the pseudonym of HJ Harry.

When you decided to start writing did you have a plan in place or did you just jump in and learn as you go?

I am a shoot from the hip kind of guy.

What is one of the biggest hurdles you had to overcome in starting your writing career?

Getting taken seriously, I have always been a joker yet I don’t write comedy lol.

If you could give new or aspiring authors one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be subdued when seeking help and you can’t expect anything from anyone so be grateful when someone does offer you a leg.

Are there other genres that you would like to write in aside from your current genre?

I have books in several genres.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Louis Lamoure, Jean Auel, James Clavele, Voltaire.

Is there any one author that directly inspires your work?

 No

What is your favorite work you have published?

 Sonny or Wayward Son.

If a movie were made of your favorite published work. Who would be the lead?

 Morgan Freeman

If you could ask one literary figure from the past advice, who would it be?

I’m a recluse and don’t want to talk to anyone.

What goals do you have for your writing career?

Silly question.

When self-publishing what do you think the most important aspect is to having a successful release?

A claim to fame and or brand recognition which of course is difficult for multi genre authors.

Describe your writing process. Do you outline your book first? Do you write start to finish then edit or do you edit each chapter?

I’m a shoot from the hip kind of guy. I do edit when still 30k from the ending to make sure it is somewhat cohesive before going into the ending.

Sci Fy 100+K, Standalone horror, 100 K Post Apoc 70K Epic Fantasy 175+K.

When researching for your book how important are the details for you as a writer?

I’m not a text book, I am telling the story. I learn enough to be accurate without slowing the story, then I forget it. It is like the Kelly Bunde complex, I have to discard useless data in order to take more in.

How do you deal with writer’s block or has this every been an issue?

Not an issue as of yet. If I am not writing it is because I have other things to take care of.

Did you have any fear of putting your work out there for the world to see? If so, how did you get past it?

How do you deal with derogatory or uncomplimentary reviews?

 Rarely read reviews.
