Edge of a knife, a blade thin as atoms

we tiptoe on the tightrope, and stare at the dawn

we’re facing.

These are the final hours we will be these people,

this is the last day before we begin again.

Set down the weight, love, teach your lips the shape

of goodbye, and offer it gently to those

who mistreat your heart,

joy has never been a shameful thing.

Hour hand ticking towards vertical,

seconds fall like sandbags, let your

balloon rise, let yourself taste cloud

and rainfall from its source, remember, love,

it’s only up that will bring you through

the storm.

Here, my lips at midnight,

silencing the shake you have carried,

whispering into yours that all things will

be alright. Feel them speak of triumph

that of all people, scattered across the

sea of this place, I found you, and you, me,

feel them remind you what you’ve always known,

that above all things,

our joy, has never been a shameful thing.
