I won’t forget the years
I was lonesome,
the forlorn smile faked
as an unwrapped gift I gave
to all those who worried
of me. I won’t forget the
way Christmas lights blur
and become rainbow
when eyes swell with tears
and snowfall hangs
on some quiet drive home
from some full house of
festivity and warmth.
Sadness is a barbed hook,
reminds you of itself
long after its been removed,
and I will not forget those years.
Now, I’ll reach across the space
between the seats,
across the mattress,
over the small pile of
wrapping paper and ribbon,
and hold your hand like
some dreamed of thing
but I will not
forget.
