Why It's the Best Time to Read a Ghost Story

The winter solstice is approaching, and for centuries the belief has been that on the shortest day of the year, the veil between the living and the departest is most easily lifted. 

That is why the ghosts appeared to Ebeneezer Scrooge just before Christmas. And why the tradition of the Christmas ghost story--of which A Christmas Carol is the shining star--was born.
