What if he comes,
writes what I could not,
says all I forgot
and promises
what I didn’t think
to offer?

If I soak you in the shower
of compliment and vow,
if I fall to fainting
breathless from forgetting
to pause for air,
if I stare silently across the room
and the levee of these lids
fails, this is why,
this will always
be why.
