Collar up in case the winds came,
stillness instead, so
collar down,
then the winds came.

Never had a guard to put up
in case sorrow visited,
no moat around this heart,
no drawbridge
against the flame and
battering ram of grief,

sorrow came, grief beside it,
walked right through
the front gates.

No place for war here,
so I fed them as friends,
welcomed them with feast
and festivity,
leaned in against the noise
and as their stories spun
visible and thick in the air,
listened.
