Amazon to Lease New Office Space in New York City Even Without Huge Subsidies (Report)

Amazon will lease a massive Manhattan office space without taking any financial incentives from the city or state of New York, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The e-commerce giant has signed a new lease for 335,000 square feet in the new Hudson Yards neighborhood. The office will employ 1,500+ workers.

The move comes less than a year after the company canceled plans to open a new headquarters in Queens, after local and state politicians, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, opposed a $3 billion package of tax and financial incentives offered by NYC mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Amazon claimed that facility would have employed 25,000+ workers.

In February when Amazon canceled its Queens project, it explained the decision in a post to the company’s official blog. The company has yet to issue a new blog about the lease, and representatives did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

After the announcement, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Won’t you look at that: Amazon is coming to NYC anyway – *without* requiring the public to finance shady deals, helipad handouts for Jeff Bezos, & corporate giveaways.”

“Maybe the Trump admin should focus more on cutting public assistance to billionaires instead of poor families,” she added, referring to steep cuts to the food stamps program the administration proposed this week.
