We hardly realise it but every second of every day, we are making memories, capturing moments that would otherwise be fleeting; precious moments that we store like an internal photo album, hoping to call on at a later time.
But what if one day they weren’t there anymore? What if that internal photo album was destroyed?
It wasn’t something I’d considered all that much until I started writing my latest novel, Beautiful, Fragile. I hadn’t thought about what it would mean to lose my memories or how it could change me or those around me.
My protagonist, Faith James, a fun-loving, twenty-five-year-old Australian girl, wakes one morning in a Spanish hospital with a head injury and a third of her life’s memories gone.
You can imagine her panic at this, especially when a strange man (her husband) arrives to collect her and she’s told she’s ten years older, has a life in London with children she can’t remember and friends she’s never heard of.
Despite this panic, she returns to London with Will and begins her emotional journey to recover what she’s lost. She must meet her children, learn to be their mother, live in a house she doesn’t recognise and navigate the delicate path of a failing marriage.
Memories aren’t everlasting. They’re delicate images that we pile together in our brain in the hope that we will forever retain them. They are the perfect output of all the moments that have made up our lives. Every precious minute with our children and grandchildren, our partners, family and friends, all tucked away for safe-keeping.
Writing this novel has reminded me that memories are just that. Beautiful, fragile things that are so easy to misplace or lose forever and once gone, you may never get them back. You have to hand it to Faith. She could have run back to the life she remembered, the one from ten years earlier where everything was familiar and comfortable, and who would blame her? Instead, she digs in her heels and gives her ‘new’ life a go.
I admire her courage and positivity in the face of such a daunting task. Does it work out for her? You’ll have to find out!
