Mornings will be silent, evenings too,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

and there is no avoiding this.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Where birdsong was,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

noiselessness,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

and this is what will be.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Three billion birds in under⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

a century, up and off and vanished,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

and none by the power⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

of their own wingbeats.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gone, and with them goes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

the songs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“This is a loss of nature,”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

a scientist says with what I imagine⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

are tears in his eyes,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

and stares straight ahead,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

through that strange quiet place⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

that comes with disbelief. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I want no part of a birdless world,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I cannot fathom the depth⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

of that emptiness, that silence.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Soon, there will be nothing left here,⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

but us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
