Terrence Malick’s
A Hidden Life is a great, great masterpiece, and you must see it. It is his most linear film since
The New World — also a masterpiece, and one of the most underrated films ever made, IMO, for reasons explained by John Patterson
here — but in the fourteen years since
The New World came out Malick has deepened both his vision and his craft. I will have more to say about it, but only after more people have seen it.
When you see the film — I admit no doubt on this point — and
if you sit through the credits, you will see a card titled “Special Thanks” which contains a list of names. One of them is mine.
