Such a great sadness,
and it comes daily,

I sit and stare out the window
and wish I could explain

to the creatures I see, how safe
they would be with me.

Such sadness in my inability
to reach out and let them

crawl, flutter, and curl up
in the palm of my hands.

You are safe here, you are
safe here, I whisper over

and again, and sometimes,
they look up, sit in perfect

stillness, and for half a moment
seem to understand.
