Is your book club reading THE DAUGHTERS OF TEMPERANCE HOBBS? I have been hit by a baby train, but here are some discussion questions to last until the paperback.
The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs1. Connie is at a stage in her life where she discovers that she has responsibilities to her family and community that might conflict with her ambitions for herself. Have you had to weigh being pulled in two different directions like that? What do you think of how Connie processes her choice?
2. Like Physick Book before it, Daughters has a complicated relationship with ambition, showing that it can be a motivating factor in some cases, but a warping factor in others. How can we tell the difference?
3. Each iteration of the weather work has slightly different wording. Why do you think that is?
4. Magic in Physick World always comes at a cost, either in physical pain, or emotional pain, or possibly even in environmental collapse. Is it worth it?
5. The real life baby is wailing while I try to write question 5. What's up with babies, anyway? Are they magical beasts? Where do they even come from? Isn't it odd that the author would write up fictional babies and then have a real one right after? Weird right? What's up with that?
