Whitewashed walls  and a garden off the back,
stone walls for miles fading off into the green,
somewhere even it meets the blue.

Dirt road and the sound of the rare approach,
we knew nothing of peat, of sheep and the care
for them.  They will watch us with curious eyes

and wonder of the accent we bring, foreign
to their ears.  Years we spoke of simplicity,
of less being more than enough, years.

I listen more these days, quieter voice to make room
for all that’s coming in, there is softness
where roughness once lived.
