Hudson61 It is rather poor criticism that simply aims to tear down.

Proper criticism should challenge, enhance and be an art of its own. It can engage the reader and elevate an author's work; hold the author accountable to his/her time. I think of Mythologies by Barthes or The Uses of Fiction by Calvino and it saddens me when contemporary criticism aspires to do nothing more than destroy a work or an author based on personal taste. Criticism can open the possibility of understanding, be a step in educating a reader. It should be handled with same care and intent as an author and the creation.
