Reaching My Readers

I spent the weekend doing some research and study as I delve into some business planning. I need to get smarter about the way I do things, and I’ve realized that I’m doing for my own books what I complained about publishers doing for my books — just putting them out there and hoping people find them. The trick is to figure out how to get the word out.

One thing everyone suggests is having a mailing list and a newsletter of some sort. I have resisted because that’s something I’m really not into as a reader. I feel like there’s newsletter overload. You can’t visit a web site without getting a “sign up for my newsletter” pop up. On the other hand, that is a list that I would control. Facebook throttles the reach of things on my page, so even people who’ve signed up to get them aren’t seeing them unless I buy ads. There’s a lot of clutter and noise on Twitter. People don’t seem to be reading blogs anymore (though I guess if you’re seeing this, you’re the exception). People may drop out of platforms like Facebook or Twitter for reasons having nothing to do with me — protest against the companies’ policies, taking a break from social media in general. Having a list of people who’ve said they want to receive information from me makes it more likely that these people will get that information.

So, what do you think about author newsletters? Do you sign up for them? Would you sign up for one from me? Do you just want to be notified about releases or do you want other info on things that might relate to the author’s life and work (things like recipes, knitting patterns, book/movie reviews, etc.)?

Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out where to go next after I get the next Rebels book done (don’t worry, that’s at the top of my list). I’m still playing with that idea of a series of holiday-themed fantasy romances, but I also have some other ideas in the works. One is a fantasy series that’s more of a “world” series, in which there’s one world that all these stories take place in, while each story is self-contained (with some overlap). You could read them in any order and still follow the story, but those who’ve read them all might get a little more out of them. Think Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. The other idea I’ve been playing with is a cozy paranormal mystery series. I’ve noticed that most of the “also boughts” for my books on Amazon are this kind of book, and it’s something I enjoy reading. I have the beginnings of an idea for the characters and setting.

So, what are you most likely to read? Did you come to my books from the paranormal mystery side of things, the fantasy side of things, or the romance side of things?

That’s what makes a lot of this planning difficult. I don’t fall neatly into one area I can really focus on, and my fans seem to be all over the place.

Katja 🇧🇪 I am signed up on every writer site I love and also on Amazon I follow the writers I love so I am updated every time a new book of them is out!
I also find a newsletter from the authors I like nice because they keep me in touch with how they are doing. Like some tell why they are not publishing anything or that there is a new series coming out or that one of their books is on sale...
Stuff like that. And that way I stay connected with them and don’t forget about them (if there is a lot of time between one book and the next) and don’t miss out on a new published book!
I follow you on Goodreads (so I see this post here) and I follow you on Amazon (that’s how I knew you published again and I immediately bought it!)
A newsletter would be absolutely great! Lots of people like them and they chose for it so it’s nothing compared to spam!
I think this is a must if you want to stay connected with your readers and that way you can let them know far in advance a new book is coming, people can pre-order, word gets out...
So yes go for it I would say 👍🏼

And how I found your books, it was in a Amazon reading suggestion I think - because I love the magical realism en magical sleuthing 🕵🏼‍♀️ and read many of these!

I read them all on kindle, and bought everyone of them because I am from Belgium and we do not have Kindly unlimited. I also read 99% of my books in English because there are no writers of the genre in Dutch...

On a special note for me. My husband mostly doesn’t like magical stories but loved every book of yours to! Many books are more for women but yours are actually non gender related so it appeals I think to both genders 😊

If your books don’t sell enough it has nothing to do with your books, they are one of a kind and totally amazing. In my opinion it has to do with not enough publishing and not enough presence on social media and use of means to get the word out and staying connected with the readers and possible new ones... Ps: absolutely no cretic - just a fan’s point of view
Kind regards to you
Katja

Erin I "discovered" your books when a friend gave me the first Enchanted, Inc. book as a gift back when the series was new. I've read all your books and novellas since then, although Goodreads just now displayed a couple of older books from the 1990s that I'd never heard of. I own copies of some of them and have borrowed the rest from my library after putting in purchase requests that were filled. I'm a public librarian, so I suggest your books whenever they match what a reader is looking for.

Unlike your previous commenter, I don't sign up for any newsletters--I have no time to read them, and they'd just get lost in my overflowing inbox. But if it wouldn't take too much time away from your book writing, it might be a nice thing for many folks. Personally, I get my news about your upcoming releases from this very blog you write. Goodreads emails me a weekly digest of posts from authors I follow, and when I need a mental break at work, I scan through the posts and get caught up. (Now that I think of it, it's not all that different from reading a newsletter....) I also follow you and a few other authors on Twitter, so that's a nice place for quick announcements and quirky interactions, too.

I am anxiously awaiting the next Rebels book, so I'm glad you've got that at the top of your list! Otherwise, I'm happy to read anything you'd like to write. I'm a "character doorway" person who likes to read things that are funny and not scary or violent, but beyond that, I'm pretty flexible. Holiday-themed fantasy romances, cozy paranormal mysteries--it's all good! The main thing is that you write something you're interested in because that will shine through in your writing.

Have you ever shared your books on NetGalley prior to publication? That can be a good way to get the word out and enlarge your audience, too. I don't know much about the author/publisher side of things, just the librarian's view, but we can vote for books to be on the monthly Library Reads lists and share reviews on social media, which boosts your profile/publicity.

Thanks for writing such delightful books!! :)
