A crispness, morning dew on the edge
of morning frost, breath just starting
to rise visible.  Autumn,
or at least a trace of it.

There’s a smell to this season,
beyond the cliche cider scents and
clove, it’s some sweetness
that only emerges moments
before an impending decay.
It smells of hibernation, of hope
that this winter, like all those that
came before, will come to pass,
but not yet.  Smoke rises from
chimneys, fired again after
dormancy.

I know few things with certainty,
but this is one,
I was built for this season,
constructed only
for the Fall.
