Updrift, book 1 of the Mer Chronicles

Errin Stevens Picture I won Updrift from a Goodreads giveaway, I don't know how long ago. I've been doing my best to read the books I own before purchase more, but as a bibliophile, you know how difficult that can become. Can be. But this is the second book I've pulled from one of the various stacks about my office.

So was the wait worth it?

No, they're not mermaids; they're something else. Either way, Kate and her mother Cara find themselves swept into a world of fantasy and romance (which is questionable) and a case of kidnapping!

Kate, now fatherless, has to adapt to her new life. Her mother, Cara, moved them to a small town to begin working as a librarian. There she's thrived, as did her daughter, but after a few of the strangest parties, they both find themselves part of the most mysterious family. A family that literally changes your life!

That's as vague as I can be concerning this novel. I have to be honest when I say I don't think I liked this book. Don't get me wrong, it was very different, originality is amazing. I also liked the book cover, but dang it if I didn't find a lot of things wrong with the way things happened!

First, the mysterious family I mentioned. I don't care how new you are, you don't allow strangers to run your family, personal life or finances. You don't let people tell you how to raise your child either, nor do you give said stranger permission to tell your child when she can and can not date! What the heck!? Then Cara pretty much  warned Kate off boys, just to not only engage in premarital sex but then marry in the blink of an eye! Okay, if that's not weird enough, Kate's life was choreographed (even before Cara knew), kept away from the guy she liked until he was groomed enough to do what needed to be done - I can't give the part away. THEN when he was ready, he emotionally controlled her, took her away to an island and had sex for three days1 I'm sorry, I can't call it making love because he manipulated her! It was like reading a touching rape scene to me! I was angered by it all. Seriously!

Then the thrilling kidnapping- that felt tossed in. Near the ending of the story, there's an antagonist? He came right outta left field with a plan created by my youngest grand child. Come on man!

Now I did love the way Cara and Kate's story came about. Even the crap life of her aunt was interesting, but when her uncle tried to do what he did and then that same mysterious family mind-blew them into falling in line with the rest of the crew? I let that book drop to the floor. I was floored! It was so fantastical, I just said, "Wow" and let it go. And don't get me started on the pacing of it all.

Also, the acceptance of what and who Gabe was, other than Kate's love interstate's, was stupid. I know, stupid is an awful word, but it describes what happens perfectly. When your life's turned upside down by unbelievable information, you don't just jump on the bandwagon- you ask questions! You think about that stuff and make a sound decision! I know its just me; I have a hard time with romance, but this one... I don't know. I just don't know.

I will not read further into the Mer Chronicles. It just didn't sit right to me and will do exactly what I said I'd do. I'm letting it go. Cheers!
