The RPG is Coming

Cyanide Studios and Atlus Entertainment have just unveiled a trailer for their forth-coming GAME OF THRONES videogame RPG. If you missed the official premiere and presentation in Paris,
here's a look.

I'll be the first to admit that I have not played a lot of videogames myself. It's not that I don't enjoy them; rather, I enjoy them too damned much. Parris often says that Sid Meier owes her, seeing as how I lost a novel to RAILROAD TYCOON and another one to PIRATES. But looking at this, I can't help be impressed by how far game graphics have come.

I haven't played the game myself yet, but the Cyanide gang has visited me a couple of times in Santa Fe to give us presentations, and discuss details of game play and background. They are presenting original stories here, with characters of their own creation, but it was important to them (and to me) that they get the look and feel of Westeros right, and I think they have. Their enthusiasm and passion for this project is palpable.

This preview has me very excited. It's another way to visit Westeros, for those of you who can't get enough, and maybe the game will even help fill some of those long years between books.

Steve Stivaktis So I don't play videogames.... yet. It's the perfect opportunity for me to start. :3

John Before you commit to buying the game, read the reviews and the game content. From what I read, you will not be playing in a time that fits within the novels, but instead in the history that precedes the novel. There is certainly a draw if you want to learn more about the history of Westeros. I'm not sure how closely they'll follow canon; I guess no one can know till the game is released.

BTW, the title of this post is misleading. There are other RPGs besides computer RPGs. When I read the headline I thought someone had been licensed to develop a table-top based on Game of Thrones.

Justin Fraxi I think the game looks gorgeous. I'll admit I was a little disappointed when I realized you can't create a customized character, but the more I read about the game, the more I realized that makes sense. You're actually participating in a real part of the story, so it's necessary to be one of two specific characters. The world itself looks amazing. I'm looking forward to it.

Sara Mega awesome! I like RPGs and am glad this will be available on consoles. Typically I like to play as a female character and it looks like that's not an option here, but you wouldn't really want to be a female in Westeros anyway. Looking forward to it!

A tabletop RPG set in Westeros already exists. The reason for the title being what it was is the earlier (as in a few months ago if I recall correctly) announcement of a "strategy" game set in Westeros. A lot of fans knew the video games were in the works and when he made the last announcement a lot of people were upset that it wasn't an RPG game to which he replied that the RPG game would be coming later.

I haven't personally checked out the table top but I believe it is published by Green Ronin if that is something you are interested in. If in fact you do try it, please let me know how it goes as I am also interested but haven't had time to get a good group game going in a few years.
