The Proposal
A novel by Jasmine Guillory
Narrated by Janina Edwards
I received The Proposal in the mail one day, from Penguin-Random House. I loved the cover of the book and I figured I’d take another chance on romance.
For some reason, whenever I read romance or marital thrillers, if I’m not instantly captured, I lose interest super-fast. I’ve always been that way. So when I read the summary, I found it hilarious, and positive enough that I'd give it a go. Did I like Jasmine Guillary’s novel? #element-c88580af-20d7-4830-9919-806433cae15d .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
The book begins with a situation that I’m sure has happened in real life. Nik, short for Nikole, is proposed to by a man she barely knows and definitely doesn’t love. The problem? (1) They’ve never discussed anything concerning a future together- mostly due to her never seeing one with the guy. And (2) He did it in front of all of his friends. And a stadium filled with baseball fans! So, she said “No.” Yeah, it’s bad. But it’s her life and if she’s going to be with someone, it has to be with someone she can actually say she sees a future with- and in love with!
Nikole managed to survive a relationship that sorta marked her for all eternity. She bases decisions, mostly off of her emotional results and that’s bad. But can she move on- especially with the handsome Dr. Carlos, who's funny, easy to talk to, and a wonderful cook. But will she allow her past to define her future and only see him as either a side piece, someone to hang with, like a rebound?
Believe me, it took a great deal of energy for me to do The Proposal. I don’t like romance! I don’t know why but I dread it whenever I get them, but I have to read all genre. I have to, in order to become an improved author, but this book irked every romantic nerve in my system! Which speaks volumes for Guillory and her skill for writing. I developed a Love/Hate relationship with The Proposal.
Nik was a selfish woman. She wanted everything done for her, in the name of her friends, her sanity and herself, but when it came to Carlos and doing for him, she acted as though he was asking for blood! And the fact that she actually thought he was the selfish one blew my mind! I began to understand why guy is quick to call a female crazy. LOL Nik was the epitome of insane!
The Proposal turned out to be a book I semi-liked, but only because of Nik. As far as the writing, the story build and even the interracial relationship, pure excellence. I found great appreciation in the book, even in how Nik was introduced, developed yet to me, remained the same. Carlos, on the other hand was an excellent character, along with Nik’s friends. I loved everyone but her! She’s the only one I didn’t care for.
The book’s won various accolades and I feel the lovers of romance will devour the book up with glee. As for me, I’m moving on to the next read. Cheers!
