I saw it in my hands first, before
the rest of me. Time catching up,
aging made tangible, spooked me
a spell, if I’m honest. These are my
father’s hands, I said to no one,
where did I go?
Strong hands, I think I’d risk to
offer, long fingers with ink I’ve added
over the years, veins still lifted
above the surface, like underskin
rivers downstream from the
mountain I call a heart.
These have held so much weight,
have tenderly touched faces,
felt tears soak into the surfaces,
these have known shaking,
and stillness,
these have earned the scars,
and still do.
