She wraps her arms around
her own waist when she’s naked,
can’t help it, she says,
sometime ago she got used to hiding
her own skin, hiding in it, too.

Maybe she’s holding herself
I think, better than all those
that couldn’t do it properly,
maybe it’s not hiding, but
protecting.  Maybe
it’s never been about shame
but about not giving away
anything
to anyone who has not yet
earned it.
