When each book in the SNOW LIKE ASHES trilogy came out, I prepared for months. Release day was a party. I was giddy and totally enraptured by my books and this industry.
When THESE REBEL WAVES came out, I again prepared for months. But the industry had changed. Where once authors had hope of fostering our own success and hitting the list through our efforts, it became more and more manufactured. So when release day rolled around, I had a black-out level panic attack. I just wanted the book out so I could move on.
As THESE DIVIDED SHORES approached, I promised I wouldn’t break myself marketing it. I’d try to distance myself from feeling like a personal failure every time my book wasn’t included in round up lists, or Insta pics, or marketing pushes. And then my laptop bit it the week before release, and I thought “Well now I’ll have to not care.”
It’s amazing how resilient hope is though. There’s still that little persistent voice whispering “But maybe it could surprise you!” even though I vividly remember how ill last year’s release made me. Book releases remain such a personal thing, even as the industry has changed so much.
I wish I had an uplifting note to end on. I wish I could be as happy as when I took this picture, and truly just enjoy having five books published. There is so much below the surface, so many mental hoops and struggles, and I wanted to be more candid with this release. These last two books have not been kind to me. Their releases have been extra unkind. This job is hard. It isn’t always worth it.
But…I’m forcing myself to put a “But”…after two years of ideas not clicking, I’m finally 20k words into a WIP I adore. I have a new series coming out next year with @kris10writes, and having her shoulder this journey with me has been more beautiful than I can put words too.
Life goes on. And sometimes that’s the most uplifting thing anyone can say.
