pumps,’ says Papa.

‘Painted iron,

hornbeam handle.’

‘No need,’ says Thomas.

‘I know how to drop

the bucket

so she fills

the first time.

~

‘Echoes lift

from well-stones.

My face down there,

winks on the water.

Strength in these arms.’
