Chris Angelis Francis, ranting against mantras makes two of us. Few things annoy me more than people who believe art can be approached holding a rule book. Yes, there are "rules"; yes, you should know them; no, you don't have to always follow them.
My pet peeve when it comes to "show, don't tell" is when people refer to Ernest Hemingway as the go-to authority figure. He might be, indeed. And his style is so hopelessly dry and lifeless that I simply can't stand him.
Everything is a balance. Sometimes you tilt one way, sometimes another. But it's experience that shows you when to do what, not a rule book.
