Hello! I absolutely adore all your work and Im always so excited to see you posting about a WIP! How do you stay motivated when writing? It takes me forever to write anything. The one fic I have posted that wasnt written in one sitting took me 4 years and
That’s a good question! I think that the honest answer is that no one is motivated 100% of the time. I think what does help me stay on track is my desire to share the story I’ve written, and I can’t do that if it isn’t finished. That’s my personal stance and not one I’m trying to impose on anyone else at all! I would just fret endlessly if I started posting a story before knowing for sure that I knew how to end it, so I don’t. Less pressure for me that way, for sure! I also make myself write in the order the story needs to go - no jumping around for me. I never start a story without knowing the basics of how it begins, how it ends, and at least a few major points along the way. I don’t like to overplan; that can kill a story (for me, at least!). I often have scenes in mind that come later in the story, and tempting as it would be to jump ahead and just write those moments, I know that for me and for my process, I need for it to go in order, so sometimes writing towards those big moments can help keep me going, because I want to get there and write that scene!
Whenever I’ve had to take a break from my story, the best thing for me to do is go back and re-read it, and if not from the beginning, then at least the last or newest section, editing as I go. That helps remind me of the trajectory I was on so that the continuity doesn’t break down, too! Sometimes what helps is sharing a scene or two with a trusted friend - their excitement can really help, too! I used to think that posting my little updates would be a pain in the ass for my followers - and indeed, a few did tell me that! - but I kept doing it partly because more people than the complainers asked me to, and also because people’s excitement helps fuel my own!
I don’t know if any of that was helpful, but here’s hoping! All the very best with your story!
