Abby is a catalyst for change in both Gabe and Seth’s lives. The meaning of her name, Kaiāulu is a wind name on the Leeward Coast of Oahu. Abby is the “wind of change.” Her story can be read in Swimming Sideways.
Five things to know about Gabe:
Gabe is an adopted seventeen-year-old. He doesn’t talk about his “before,” except to his therapist Dr. Ibrahim Miller. He adores his adoptive parents.
Gabe is a deep thinker. He’s a writer - mostly poetry - though he doesn’t share it.
He works in his dad’s hardware store. This is his safe place.
Life for Gabe is harsh; high school is torture, but Gabe is strong, resilient and mostly stubborn. Abby feels like the first peer in two years to treat him with kindness and he’s not sure if he can trust her.
Even though his best friend Seth betrayed him, Gabe feels bad for him (which Gabe realizes is pretty stupid on his part because Seth’s a jerk).
