Beyond the Binary

Reading blog posts for International Non-Binary People's Day yesterday encouraged me to blog on Love Bytes Reviews about trying to develop a better sensitivity to people beyond the binary in my writing and reading.

Regencyfan93 I just added pronouns to my Goodreads profile and removed the gender selection (Male/Female/Custom). Thank you for the prompt.

<3 I hope someday it will become a casual norm to introduce ourselves by name and pronouns. I will give GR credit for having a "Custom" gender option - lots of places I'm still seeing just M/F (including the last medical office I was in, which should know better.)

Regencyfan93 A few years ago I made a diagram of how state and county systems record gender. As you have noted with GR, some systems allow "unknown" or "other" for gender while many still have only male/female. People who are receiving financial assistance may not have the insurance for surgery or hormones, or funds for name/gender change on legal documents. When providing services we need to be respectful of people's identity, no matter what documents or systems show.

Absolutely. As a bonus, since systems feed data to each other, the more systems allow for a third gender designation, the more others have to include it to allow for easy data transfer. So it will help spread the option.
