Today I’m speaking with author, Shay Michaelson. Hello Shay, and welcome to AuthorBlogSpot. Tell me, what made you decide to become a writer?

I love to create worlds in my head. The relationship between two people fascinates me. I always wonder what it was that one person saw in the other that made them think “that’s the one for me.”

I’ve often wondered about that myself. So, how long did it take you to get published the first time and how did it happen?

I started writing for myself about ten years ago (maybe longer?), but never really did anything with it. At the time, self-publishing wasn’t an option. I had no clue how to get a publishing company to even read my manuscript. All the horror stories said unless you knew someone in the industry, your manuscript would more than likely end up in a slush pile. When self-publishing started making headway, my husband pushed me to try it and see how it goes.

Would you do anything differently the next time? And if so, what would it be?

I’m still really new at this and still not sure about a lot of things. Marketing is something I wish I knew how to do better.

You and me both! What advice would you give an aspiring author?

Go to a writer’s conference. You can pick up a lot of information at those.

I know I did. When I joined RWA, I soaked up all I could about the craft of writing the first time or two and then learned all I could about the publishing industry. But marketing seems to be an ongoing educational endeavor for me. So, Shay, what (or who) inspires or influences your writing?

I love, love, love a book that can pull at my heartstrings. I love it when I can feel what the characters are feeling. When the guy decides he wants the woman, chases after her, then something or someone gets in their way and rips them apart. (Usually, it’s something the man did.)

How long have you been writing professionally, Shay, and do you write full-time or part-time?

I self-published my first book March 17, 2018. I write part-time since I’m still a full-time school nurse. I have three more years and then I can retire and write full-time!

Yay! That’s my dream, too, except I’m already retired but still have to work. It seems life keeps throwing things at me to keep me from writing full-time, but someday… In the meantime, tell me what you do for fun when you are not writing.

Reading, swimming/hanging out at my pool or going to the river with my husband.

That sounds wonderful! Where do you reside, Shay?

I live in Missouri.

Do you have any appearances/book signings scheduled this year? And where are they?

Yes. I’m going to be at the Indie Romance Convention Oct 9-12th in Lebanon, TN. I’m really excited. It’s my first ever signing.
