Born in Manitoba and raised in Winnipeg, Canadian artist Ryan Heshka spent much of his youth in the company of old comics and pulp magazines. His work channels the giants of the genre, such as Norman Saunders and Frank R. Paul (examples below):
But Heshka is no mere copyist. While his works pay respect to the past, they are not an homage. In fact, I think they say more about our own relationship to the past than about the past to its imagined future. See for yourself.
