Sailboat Breaks Keel & Sinks, Crew Rescued by USCG, Sailing near Charleston #sailing #sailboat

On March 10, 2019, and March 12, 2019, the USCG Air Station Savanna rescued two sailboat crews in distress in South Carolina. One boat the SV Drippe, lost its steering and was headed to the rocks. A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter hoisted the man on board to safety near Georgetown, SC after his sailboat was in too shallow water for the US Coast Guard medium response boat to reach him. On March 12, 2019, three people aboard called a mayday after their boat hit hard aground and lost its keel near Seabrook Island, South Carolina, USA near Charleston. All three climbed into the 30-foot sailing yacht’s dinghy as they awaited helicopter rescue. All three were hoisted to safety. No injuries were reported.

The March 12, 2019, incident is similar to the story of Nikki Walsh and Tanner Broadwell who lost their sailboat when its keel bolts failed when it grounded on a sand bar.

“Great work by our Charleston crew on Wednesday, they performed a challenging hoist of a man after his sailboat became disabled near North Santee Bay in Georgetown, South Carolina.” FB

“The Coast Guard rescued a man from a disabled sailboat Wednesday near North Santee Bay in Georgetown.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston Command Center watchstanders received a call at 3:11 p.m. from the operator of the Drippe, a 38-foot sailboat, stating he was disabled and drifting towards rocks.

A Coast Guard Station Georgetown 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew and a Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew launched to assist.

The RB-M crew arrived on scene and were unable to reach the disabled vessel due to water depth. The dolphin crew hoisted the man and transported him to Georgetown Airport.

No injuries were reported.”

“BZ to our non-duty crew being in the right place at the right time! During a transit back from Charleston on Friday, they received a Mayday call for three people in the water after their sailboat sank near Sea Brook Island. They quickly sprang into action and hoisted all of them from the water.”
