Her heart had begun to crack. She could feel it crumbling and the pieces were settling in her stomach. She held her breath, thinking that she might be able to hold it together until this was all over—but she didn’t anticipate the way Hades would look at her—with longing and regret and desperation, and in those eyes, as deep and as vast as the universe, she could see the lifetimes they might have spent together.

Then he spoke, and it was his words that shattered her heart. 

“You are your own prisoner, Persephone.”

It was over.
