Why I Like to Watch Film Noirs

Over the past several days, I've watched two film noir gems out on DVD: GUN CRAZY (1950)and THE SET-UP (1949). If you like crime fiction, you're missing a real treat if you haven't seen either one.

GUN CRAZY starring John Dall and Peggy Cummins is one of my all-time favorite film noirs. Each time I watch it, I see new things, good and not-so-good, I missed previously. In short, Dall and Cummins go on a crime spree a la the Parkers, Clyde and Bonnie. Dall and Cummins play off each other with sensual, vulnerable energy.

This was my first viewing of THE SET-UP, a boxing flick with Robert Ryan as the washed up pug refusing to take a dive and go along with the fix. Ryan was a heavyweight champ at Dartmouth, so the fight scenes look real and gritty. He's another underrated actor who died much too young of lung cancer.

One reason I like watching film noir is because the pictures are shot in black-and-white. That's how I started out watching TV as a kid. Plus film noir directors didn't have jack for a budget, and yet they directed great watchable films. For instance, the nuances and details in THE SET-UP are terrific. So, go boot up the DVD player and watch 'em.

Les Edgerton These are truly great noir films, Ed! Thanks for re-reminding us of their existence--been a long time since I've seen them and I'm going to see if I can get copies.

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye I adore Film Noir my fav underrated classic being Detour(1945).

I have not even heard of these two films. There are many hidden gems of film noirs. Shadowed by Bogart,Sterling Hayden and co.

Black and white makes any film noir look more atmosphere strong, cool .

Marilyn lights up the scenes in Asphalt Jungle. Love that film, too. Thanks for the recommendations.

I had a man crush on Sterling Hayden after seeing Asphalt Jungle and The Killing in the same wonderful week. He was so damn cool, i can see why they called him the blond savage.

He even temporary passed Bogey as my fav classic era actor.

Right. Hayden as a large man has a menacing presence. He's pretty good in The Asphalt Jungle.

Srinivas Veeraraghavan Just mirrored my own thoughts! The Noir is my fav. genre by far.

My Top 5 Noirs would be: The Maltese Falcon (Bogey is the KING), Kiss Me Deadly, Out Of The Past (Mitchum kicked serious arse with his laidback, oily charm while patenting the art of radiating studied nonchalance without effort), The Woman In The Window (One of my fav. Films and must have been so original at its time) and The Third Man.

But Jean-Pierre Melville transcended the genre (Though he is not considered a classical Noir man for a variety of reasons). Made some of the greatest Films ever.

I'd concur with your Top 5. Out of the Past is RM's best film. The Third Man is great. Love the underground camera shots. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to see OOTP on DVD again tonight.
