Abortion Restrictions are an Attack on Women

This is not a political blog (usually) because its intent is basically to explore the concepts in my novels and short stories, provide reviews and writing ideas, talk about books, and explore magic.

[image error]I was surprised a few days ago to see comments out of Barbara Bush’s memoir to the effect that she believed the soul of a baby enters the child with the first breath and departs from a dying human with the last breath. This is an old belief, one that I have held for many years.

Since this is my belief, I do not consider the fetus to be a human person subject to laws and court decisions. It is a growth within a woman’s body that may or may not become a child. Until before it’s born, it has no soul. To put it bluntly, it is outside the purview of laws passed by Congress and state legislatures. To suggest otherwise is to attack women, subjecting their bodies to legislation, court decisions, the beliefs of multiple religions, and popular opinion.

The United States has no state religion and should not be held hostage by the religious beliefs of those who fight against abortion. Yet our laws about abortion are often based on conservative religious beliefs. Those who pass such laws have no right to pass them because (a) in many cases men are behind those laws, (b) laws based on conservative or any other religious beliefs have no standing, and (c) overturning Roe V. Wade is unconstitutional and outside the scope of what Congress and state legislatures are allowed to do.

Planned Parenthood states that 25% of the country’s women will have an abortion. This is no more the country’s or the lawmakers’ business than any other operation. Those who think this is a matter of public opinion, Congress, and the courts are guilty of attacking women and their sovereignty over their own bodies.
